What Is Accelerated Resolution Therapy?

Accelerated Resolution Therapy (ART) is an evidence-based, trauma-focused therapy that helps the brain and nervous system process distressing experiences that have become “stuck.” Unlike traditional talk therapy, ART works directly with how memories, emotions, and body responses are stored in the nervous system.

ART uses bilateral stimulation and imagery to help the brain naturally reorganize distressing material so it no longer triggers the same emotional or physiological reactions. The memory itself is not erased, but the emotional charge and automatic responses connected to it can change.

How ART Works

ART is based on principles of memory reconsolidation, the brain’s natural ability to update and reorganize stored experiences.

During an ART session, clients remain fully awake, present, and in control. The therapist guides a structured process that allows the nervous system to process distressing material without repeatedly reliving or verbally recounting painful details.

ART is:

  • Structured and intentional

  • Carefully paced

  • Oriented toward nervous system regulation

  • Focused on resolution rather than prolonged retelling

What ART Can Help With

Accelerated Resolution Therapy is commonly used to address:

  • Trauma (single-incident, relational, or complex trauma)

  • Anxiety and panic responses

  • Intrusive thoughts or mental imagery

  • Emotional reactivity or shutdown

  • Chronic stress responses

  • Distress linked to past experiences that continue to affect the present

ART can be helpful when symptoms feel automatic, intense, or resistant to talk therapy alone.

What ART Is Like for Clients

  • ART sessions are:

    • Collaborative and client-led

    • Non-hypnotic (you are fully aware and in control)

    • Focused on internal processing rather than detailed verbal storytelling

    • Designed to avoid retraumatization

Clients are never required to share details they are not comfortable discussing. The emphasis is on how the experience is held in the nervous system, not on repeatedly revisiting the story.

Many clients report feeling calmer, more regulated, and less reactive as processing unfolds.

ART Within My Practice

At The Counseling Haven, ART is a core modality, not an add-on. As a certified Master Practitioner in ART, I use the modality within a trauma-informed, neuroscience-based, and phased approach to therapy.

Treatment typically begins with building regulation and stability before moving into focused trauma processing using ART. This pacing helps ensure that clients have the internal resources needed to engage in deeper work safely and effectively.

ART may be used within:

  • Weekly therapy sessions

  • Extended ART Intensive sessions (by consultation)

Is ART Right for You?

ART may be a good fit if you:

  • Feel stuck despite insight or previous therapy

  • Experience anxiety or intrusive thoughts that feel automatic

  • Want trauma processing without repeatedly reliving painful events

  • Prefer structured, focused therapy

  • Are seeking nervous-system-based change rather than coping alone

A consultation helps determine whether ART is appropriate and how it may fit into your overall treatment plan.
